National Service Scheme
Preamble
The National Service Scheme (NSS) is an Indian government-sponsored public service program conducted by the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India. Popularly known as NSS, the scheme was launched in Gandhiji’s Centenary year, 1969. Aimed at developing student’s personality through community service, NSS is a voluntary association of young people in Colleges, Universities and at +2 level working for a campus-community linkage. Today, NSS has more than 3.2 million student volunteers on its roll spread over 298 Universities and 42 (+2) Senior Secondary Councils and Directorate of Vocational Education all over the country.
At Soundarya Institute of Management and Science, the National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit was established on 2008. Since its inception, the unit has successfully conducted various social activities. In the current academic year, 100 students, including 53 girls from different branches of the institute, have registered for the program.
Objectives of the NSS Program:
1.Promotion of Social Welfare: To instill a sense of social responsibility in students, encouraging them to actively contribute to the welfare of society.
2.Unbiased Service to Society: To provide assistance to all individuals in need, regardless of background, enhancing their standard of living and enabling them to live with dignity.
3.Learning Through Engagement: To facilitate experiential learning by engaging with communities in rural areas, allowing volunteers to understand and appreciate the values of resourcefulness and resilience in leading a fulfilling life despite limitations.
4.Disaster Relief Support: To offer immediate aid during natural and man-made disasters by providing essential supplies such as food, clothing, and first aid to affected individuals, ensuring their basic needs are met during crises.
5.Green Initiatives: To promote environmental sustainability by aiming to plant over 5,000 trees in the next three years. This initiative will involve awareness campaigns and activities that encourage students and community members to engage in tree planting, waste management, and conservation efforts, fostering a healthier planet for future generations.
